"i love my degree and the classes, they are all interesting"
conor hennessy, in his 2nd year of Accounting & Finance, from ardee, co. louth, is a rugby sports scholarship student at dkit.
conor plays out-half for dundalk rfc and captained the dkit rugby club this year. he usually trains twice a week with his club and once with the college team where sessions can be competitive but enjoyable. as part of the sports scholarship, there is extra strength and conditioning training available to conor and the rest of his peers.
conor has been playing sport since a young age, and got to the mcmullan cup final as captain of his school team;
it was a great honour to captain my school and the buzz of playing in a stadium with all my school friends and family there was something really great.”
speaking about the sporting facilities available in dkit, conor says;
The pitches in DkIT are great with the amount of outside pitches being so large. Also when it gets wet and cold in the winter we then have the option of training inside at DKIT sport. The gym in DKIT Sport as well as the pool is top quality and is accessible for all students. Our Strength & Conditioning training is in the high performance gym which is state of the art and is really beneficial for anyone who gets to use it.”
conor enjoys being a sports scholar, but admits that the balance between sport and study can be difficult. despite that, there is always help on hand;
it can be difficult to balance the workload especially in first year when there is so much change. i find it very important not to let the work pile up. as a sport scholar there is always help when you look for it. derek especially goes above and beyond if there are ever any issues academically with lecturers or exams or getting out of class for games. it just helps when everything runs smoother.”
conor is in his 2nd year of the BA (Hons) in Accounting & Finance, and offers the following advice for anyone considering the course;
i love my degree and the classes they are all interesting. i would definitely recommend it to anyone hesitant to go through with it as it can be very helpful and has many options career wise.”
